History of the Society

Started in 1919, the Society has a long and proud history.

Florence Shepherd

The Russell Horticultural Society first welcomed a female president, Florence Shepherd, in 1927. She was president until 1929 and is the first recorded female president of a community organization in the Township of Russell. As president, she focused on encouraging residents to clean up the village, care for lawns and plant hard maples and new varieties of flowers and bulbs as well as encouraging council to cut weeds and remove rubbish along streets. Florence paved the way for other women to lead the Society over the years and make lasting contributions to our community.
