Hello, my name is Diane Wade and along with Suzanne Ruddy, Wilma Bass and Mary Lynn Lackie, we were the leaders for the junior gardening program. Last year we had a total of 37 gardeners who all came out during the long weekend of May to pick up their plants. A variety of two vegetables and two flowering plants were handed out to these budding gardeners.
Last year for each group we tried new plants. Everyone received some strawberry plants to try to grow for strawberries next summer. As well the 17 sprouts grew yellow onions, gazanias, dwarf red sunflowers and purple beans, the 15 juniors grew red onions, Bok Choy, bachelor buttons and coleus and the six seniors grew white onions, purple kohlrabi, cosmos and asters.
Along with the flowers and veggies they all had 5 other craft/flower arrangements to bring to the show. Summer flew by and the next thing we knew, it was judging day. Due to the cool, wet weather and the proximity of the gardens, we had one long day of judging. Thanks to Alice Proper, who judged some wonderful gardens. She commented on the lack of weeds and wonderful imagination. Photographs were taken of each garden to create a collage for the Garden Show at the fair.
The 2009 Garden Show was a great success with 30 members taking part. It was very interesting and exciting to have the show during the fair. Instead of a one day affair, the items were displayed for 4 days. There were some wonderful sunflowers, interesting sand art, great looking onions, imaginative flower arrangements, toad houses and bridge designs. The awards were handed out that same evening and the winners were:
Best of Show – Peter Wake for his rock bridge.
Dugdale Junior Achievement Award – Nicholas West for showing the most improvement and enthusiasm.
Russell Hort. Junior Champion Award – Keelee Christie for the highest number of points.
Giant Tiger Award – Sierra Ion for first time gardener with the highest number of points.
Most Imaginative Garden – Sierra Ion.
Most Enthusiastic – William McDougall.
Highest number of points for sprouts – Sierra Ion.
Junior Healthiest Plant Specimen and Highest Number of Points – Keelee Christie for her coleus.
Senior Healthiest Plant Specimen and Highest Number of Points – Peter Wake for his asters.
A special thank you goes to the contributors of the special prizes – Lois Rombough, Betty Dugdale, Maureen Horan and Helena Lanthier. Thanks also to the awesome foursome who put this altogether –Suzanne Ruddy, Wilma Bass, Mary Lynn Lackie and Diane Wade. Let me take this time to wish the big winners, the kids, who got their hands dirty and had a great time doing it.

Hello, my name is Helena Lanthier and along with Wendy Wake, we are the leaders for the Junior gardening program. This year we have a total of 35 gardeners who all came out during the long weekend of May to pick up their plants.
This year for each group we went with themes. For the 14 sprouts, the theme is “Everything Little”. They will have to plant Jack-Be-Little pumpkins, Strawberry Popping corn, Scarlet Emilia and mini Petunias.
The 13 Juniors’ theme is “O Canada”. They are planting Red Stalker corn, red and white shell beans, flaming red Celosia and a new flower called Linum.
The 8 Seniors’ theme is “Garden of Giants”. They are planting Seneca corn, Scarlet Runner beans, Russian Mammoth sunflowers and Gladioli. (hope it all fits!!!)
Along with the flowers and veggies they all have 5 other craft/flower arrangements to bring to the show. This year it will be very interesting and exciting to have the show during the fair. Instead of a one day affair, the items will be displayed for 4 days.
Have great fun gardening and get dirty!

This past season we had 49 eager junior members who came to pick up their plants during the May long weekend at the plant sale. A variety of squashes (‘Papaya Pear”, “Flying Saucer” and “Magda”), two varieties of cherry tomatoes (“Yellow Pear” and Juliet Hybrid”), red potatoes, Calendula, Red Salvia, Cleome, Sunflower, Lavatera and finally a Mimosa (sensitive) plant were handed out to these budding gardeners.
Summer flew by and the next thing we knew, it was judging day. Due to the hot weather and the proximity of the gardens, we had to split the judging day into 2 days. Thanks to Grace Stapper, who saw some wonderful Yellow Pear Tomatoes, huge Cleome, great looking potato plants (and NO bugs) and the interesting Mimosa. She also commented on the lack of weeds and wonderful imagination. Photographs were taken of each garden to create a collage at the Garden Show.
Prior to the show, some of the gardeners headed over to Helena Lanthier’s house for some exhibiting tips and freezies. The 2007 Garden Show was a great success with 24 members taking part. There were some wonderful Cleomes, interesting rock animals, great looking Squash, imaginative seed packet designs, huge Mimosa and fun and interesting nature games entered by our budding gardeners. The awards were handed out that same evening and the winners were:
“Best of Show” – Trinity Brinkman - for her Cleome
“Dugdale Junior Achievement Award” – Thomas Baas - for showing the most improvement and enthusiasm.
‘Russell Hort. Junior Champion Award” – TIE: Jessica Wade and Thomas Baas - for the highest number of points
